Christian Anthropology examines the foundations and major conclusions of Pope Saint John Paul II's Theology of the Body. The focus is on the universal call to holiness and the telos of human nature. The course expounds on Saint John Paul II's Christian anthropology, which is presented as an exegesis of the first and second books of Genesis and the fifth chapter of Matthew's gospel. It explores questions and topics such as what it means to be human created in the image of God, the meaning of being embodied, the reasons for and effects of Original Sin and subsequently concupiscence on human anthropology, the baptismal call to holiness, and the resurrected state of humanity at the Parousia.

Who is this course for?

This course is directed to all persons of the Christian faith especially Priests, Religious, Ministers, catechists, parents, laity or youth leaders wishing to understand the theological, philosophical and anthropological reasons for Catholic teachings regarding the nature and purpose of humans as embodied persons.

What will be discussed in this course?

Key topics explored in this course will include the meaning of being embodied, especially embodied as male and female, how the human person is an image of the Creator both as an individual and as a communion of persons, the relationship between man and his three states of embodiment (before original sin, after sin, and in the resurrection), the role of the sacraments in the redemption of the body, and the anatomy of attraction versus identity especially as it relates to same-sex attraction and gender identity. 

Who teaches this course?

The instructor for this course is Jennifer Prather, MATS. Jennifer serves as a Research Scholar with the Institute and is the creator of Image & Gift, an original curriculum aimed at articulating the anthropology of the human person from a theological and Christological perspective. 

When is the course?

Course sessions will run from May 28 – July 30, 2022, each Saturday. Sessions last from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM central standard time (CST).

Can I take the course on my own time?

Yes! If this time doesn't work for you, you can still take the course virtually. Just register, and you will receive year-long access to all of the teaching videos! This allows you to make the course time work for your schedule and to have a little more flexibility in your day.

What is expected of each participant?

Each class is divided into a lecture section, led by the instructor, and breakout study sessions, concentrated on a text or video.  During lecture, participants are expected to be focused and ready to present questions.

During breakout study sessions, participants are expected to read the text or watch a video and to engage with their classmates in analyzing it and pulling out practical conclusions and actions.

At the end of the course, participants will submit a 3-minute video or short article (2 pages) where the participant must: Identify a current issue related to how the human person is misunderstood in their country/culture and sheds some light on how the insights from this course regarding Christian anthropology could be a way to give an answer/solution to this issue. This piece of work should be submitted by July 23, 2022.
