Let’s jump ahead a few millennia to the writings of the New Testament. In three places, Christian scripture points out a particular aspect of masculine authority in relation to his wife. St. Peter, the first pope, writes “you wives should be subordinate to your husbands” (1 Peter 3:1). St. Paul writes twice that “the husband is head of his wife” (1 Cor 11:3 & Eph 5:23).
